Rode VMPR VideoMic Pro R w Rycote Lyre Shockmount

Rode VMPR VideoMic Pro is an awesome new audio solution in a much more compact package than the previous Rode microphone (half size)- professional grade on camera audio choice to mount on top of camera with the regular size shoe mount, great features like the brand new supercardioid condenser shotgun capsule with enhanced sensitivity and less noise than the original model (without internal or external noise interfering- no undesirable rumble or vibrations and low self-noise of 14 dB), +20 decibels gain output for DSLR shooters, with 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, a 1/8″ stereo mini-jack (dual mono), integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount built from a one piece hardware thermoplastic to help prevent cable from rubbing against the unit and affecting the sound quality and helping isolate microphone from the DSLR camera body and a built-in foam windscreen. The two step 80 Hz flat high-pass filter will help prevent low-end noise like traffic or air-con in the room. It is suspended on silicon bands that will not wear out with replacement bands also provided (no more rubber bands) and 3/8 inch mounting thread.

Rode VMPR VideoMic Pro R with Rycote Lyre Shockmount

RODE VMPR VideoMic Pro is quite small, sleek and modern, weighs just 3 ounces and measures 2.95 x 3.93 x 6.69 inches. It has a mini cable that feels thinner and more flimsy than the previous Rode microphone- it doesn’t feel as solid, works on a  9 volt alkaline battery that lasts on 70 hours on a single charge (you can have the spare battery with you but not necessary as it is quite durable). Industry leading warranty is an impressive 10 years and you need to register online. The fact that it is about half the size of the original Rode microphone, that it has the Lyre shock mount and the plus 20 dB boost and not noticeable noise from camera seem to be what differentiate it from the original, sound quality is very good in both of them with perhaps a slight difference and the volume up and down options are great. It does what it is supposed to very well and works wonderfully with a variety of DSLR cameras. There are quite a few positive reviews on different sites online and scores 4.5 out of 5 stars on the day of this review. Australian RODE is one of the best microphone manufacturers and probably the best for mics with +20 dB booster for use with DSLR cameras, camcorders and portable sound recorders.
